The movie starts off with Detective William R. Summerset (Morgan Freeman) who is about to retire in 7 days, gets partnered with Detective David Mills, who has just been reassigned to the precinct (Brad Pitt). They go to a house where, this obese man has been forced to eat to death. After this Summerset insists that Mills be reassigned to a different case because he's not ready for a case this big yet. Mills says that he's ready and that this isn't his first homicide that he's worked in before. After this the Chief says no they will work on the case and ask Summerset why does he insist to be reassigned anyways, he's leaving in 7 days. The next day the police are called to an office building to find a wealthy attorney is found dead in his office with the word Greed written on the carpet in blood. After this, Summerset goes to the library and finds books
about the seven sins. After coping all the research about the books, he puts it all in the envelope and puts in on Mills' desk. The next day, Mills and Summerset go back to the building where the attorney died and they find clues of someones fingerprints of someone spelled out "Help Me". They then take samples of fingerprints to the lab and they start to analyze it but every fingerprint is saying "No Match". The man that does the scan tells them all they can do is wait because the longest he's seen a match come up is three days. They wait outside, and two days later their Captain comes and tells them that the police has again found a body in a rundown apartment above a restaurant. The body has been tied up a year to that day and at first glance the person appears to be dead but is just simply immobile and is deteriorating and is almost bones now. They also find the word Sloth written in the victims blood and come to the assumption that the killer has planned all of these killings a year in advance. Back at the office, Detective Mills' wife
calls him and ask to speak to Detective Summerset, she invites him to dinner and he at first tries to oblige but then accepts her offer. At dinner, she asks why Detective Summerset never married and he says because everyone that he meets always disagrees with his ideas. At this, Mills states that this is a very true statement. Over the next few days the detectives work on who this killer could be and one night, Detective Mills' wife calls Summerset maybe if he could have coffee with her in the morning. He got to have coffee with her and she tells him that she's pregnant but she doesn't know if she should have the baby. Summerset tells her that he forced his girlfriend to have an abortion and if she chooses to have this baby then know the costs of raising a baby in a city like that will take and to spoil the baby every chance she gets but if she doesn't then don't tell her husband that she is pregnant. That next day, while looking for the killer, Summerset enlists the help of one of his friends who works with the FBI. Summerset explains to Mills that the FBI keeps tabs on people reading books that have to do with "weird" topics such as killers, and nuclear weapons and toxins. The man comes back with the papers of all the people that have checked out books that relate to the seven sins. The find a man name John Doe (Kevin Spacey) who has read all the books about the seven sins and the detectives decide to go and talk with this man. They find where the man is leaving and they go to his apartment and they knock, and just as the are waiting they find a man coming down the hallway, they say "John, can we speak with you a minute?". And at this the man puts his briefcase down and pulls out a gun and starts to shoot at them from down the hallway. They chase after him and they each go opposite ways and David comes really close to him and John ends up knocking the gun
out of his hand and puts a gun of his own to David's head and then takes it away and runs off. Will catches up and asks what happened and David says that he was really close to getting him but he ran off. They go back to his apartment and calls reinforcement and they find all these torture devices and all these notebooks about his feelings. John ends up calling them and says that he's really surprised how quickly they found him and about how some of his plans have changed but he doesn't want to ruin the surprise. They arrive too late to to find a man severely traumatized because he was forced to wear a S&M suit simultaneously raping and killing her. This victim's blood spells out Lust on the wall. The next call the get is from a model's who's face is disfigured and the telephone is glued to one hand while pills are glued to the other. Instead of living with a disfigured face she kills herself with the pills and on the wall in her blood, Pride is written. The next morning at the police station, Doe offers himself up with the blood from the model and an unidentified victim on his clothes and hands. They can't take his finger prints because he constantly burns the skin and no fingerprint can be taken, he also wants to talk to his attorney. His lawyer states that he will plead guilty to the crimes and show Summerset and Mills where the bodies are or if they don't take the deal he will plead insanity which he is bound to win. They get in the car and Doe directs them to a desert location where supposedly the two bodies are. After the wait, a delivery van comes and Summerset goes off to see what the package is. He grabs the package from the delivery man and tells the man to turn around and run. Summerset then opens the package and sees Mills' wifes' head in the box. Mills ask what's in the package and Doe explains that he went to Mills' house that morning after he left an couldn't be the perfect husband and he was envious and so he killed her and he unborn baby
. At this, Mills says he's lying and he looks confuse because he never knew about the baby. Summerset comes and tells Mills not to kill him because that's what he wants, he wants to be dead and Mills is really confused and ends up shooting Doe right in the head. The police arrive and transport Mills in the back of a police car back to the police station and their Captain says he'll be taken care of. Their Captain then asks where will Summerset be and he says around. The movie end with Summerset stating a quote by Ernest Hemingway which states: "This world is a fine place and worth fighting for", I agree with the second part.
This movie was really excellent. I loved this movie beginning to end and I think that the actors and directors did an excellent job. The scene that stuck out the most to me is when John Doe is telling Mills and Summerset on the way to the desert, he states "Wanting people to listen, you can't just tap someone on the shoulder anymore. You have to hit them with a sledgehammer, and then you'll notice you have their strict attention." The part with hitting them with the sledgehammer I don't agree with but I do agree you sometimes have to go to strict measures to get someone to notice what their doing is not right and maybe focus on what others are doing might be quite better then the corrupt or wrong way their doing it.
I give this movie a 5/5 stars and is a must see movie
