a 30% and the audience liked it a bit better with a 57%. While that was the case on Rotten Tomatoes, on Metacritic 33% of critics liked it and 5.6 out of 10 liked it with the audience. While these scores are very bad, I still decided to watch it because why not. I haven't seen this movie in a while and who cares what the critics or other people say, when I saw the movie, I enjoyed it.
The main characters consist of Malcom Turner (Martin Lawrence), Sherry Pierce (Nia Long), John Maxwell (Paul Giamatti), Lester (Terrence Howard) and Trent Pierce (Jascha Washington). The movie starts off in an illegal dog-fighting arena in Korea where Malcom is disguised as a Chinese man and they're trying to bust everyone there but unfortunately Malcom's partner John has been identified as an FBI agent. So there is a fight, which leads into the ring leader of the illegal dog-fighting arena to be in the mud and the dogs surrounding him. The next scene shows that Lester who is in jail for murder
and armed robbery, breaking out of jail and stealing a car. The FBI then assigns Malcom and John to get and arrest Lester by staking out Sherry's grandmother, Big Momma. When Big Momma suddenly gets a call from a friend that is supposedly ill, she leaves and Malcom and John decides to come up with a plan, disguising Malcom in a suit that looks like Big Momma and his voice even sounds like Big Momma. The next day, Sherri and Trent, her ten-year-old son arrives and she doesn't even notice that Malcom is dressed up as Big Momma, only that she's lost weight. Malcom also has to deal with, trying to cook food for Sherri and Trent and after Big Momma (Malcom) not knowing how to cook for them, Sherri thinks that maybe Big Momma is just getting older and forgetting things. Malcom also has to deal with Big Momma's freaky boyfriend Ben, deliver a baby for one of the girls in the neighborhood, and she also ends up taking a self-defense class with Roland, who is the brother of the girl's baby she delivered and during that class she beats Roland up. During the time that Big Momma, Sherry and Trey are away from home. John decides to go and search the house for the suitcase with the money. But he doesn't find anything so he leaves and then Big Momma and Sherry comes home to find Trey sad because the guys at the basketball court kicks him out. So then, Big Momma and Trey go to the basketball court and they win the game and during that time, Roland witnesses them playing basketball and decides to spy on Big Momma. That night, while Sherry and Trey are asleep, Malcom goes across the street to the house that John is in, and he's in the middle of a conversation when Roland pops in and says "Gotcha!". But then he gets scared because he sees "body parts" of Big Momma but really they're just fake mannequin parts that Malcom uses to make people think that he is Big Momma. But then they tell him that they are the FBI and that they are working on a case and that if he helps them, then he'll be part of the FBI program. So the next day they deicide to go to church and Big Momma gives this speech about coming clean about situations and being honest with people. They then go home and Sherry surprises Big Momma with a surprise party at which point she goes upstairs to change and sees Big Momma boyfriend in the bed at which point she kicks him out of the room and he just decides to go to the next room. At that point, Big Momma coms upstairs and sees Trent looking for something and she tells Trent to go downstairs and then she decides to look around. At that point she accidentally drops the toy chest, and finds the money at the bottom, at which point Sherry walks in and Big Momma tells Sherry she knows about the money. Sherry explains she never knew about the money or anything about the bank robbery and that Lester had stole her keys to get the money. Sherry then decides to go back downstairs leaving Big Momma upstairs to think. At the next scene in the movie, the real Big Momma comes back to find a party at her house at which point John goes out side to diverge her from coming inside and give time to give Malcom the news so they can get out of the house. Instead, Big Momma pushes John out of the way, and comes inside for the surprise party and at that point Lester comes in sees Sherry and tells her to pack and get Trent and to leave immediately. Once Sherry, Trent and Lester are downstairs, Sherry says she has to leave at which point the real Big Momma tells Sherry but she just got here and then the fake Big Momma comes downstairs and they all look so confused. That's when Lester tries to start shooting and then Roland knocks the gun out of his hand and then they loose the bullets at which point Malcom horse kicks Lester and knocks him out. They all turn to call the police and then Lester gets up with a gun ready to shoot and then Malcom shoots him and Lester falls back down, dead obviously. The real Big Momma wants answers and the next day at church, Malcom explains why he had to act like he was Big Momma and that hopefully they can forgive him. They all start singing and then Trent and Sherry go up on stage with Malcom and everyone is forgiven at that point.
This movie was just the right paced and I particularly thought the movie to be really funny. The scene that stuck out to me the most is when Sherry, Trent and Malcom decide to go fishing. After they fish for a while, Trent asks to try it out on his own and Sherry lets him, while Trent is fishing, Sherry and Malcom decide to talk. While their talking, Malcom asks about their past and why did they decide to move to this small of a town and she tells him why. She then asks about his life, in which he makes up a lie and then he asks does she believe in second chances and she said yes and he said why don't you give me one and she smiles and says "alright". This defiantly was a turning point in Malcom's relationship with Sherry because he was thinking like an FBI agent to the fact maybe if he got close enough to her she would tell him information that could help the case. But also, he started developing feelings for her and maybe the doubt that she wasn't involved in the robbery as well.
I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars and I would definitely recommend watching it for good laughs and enjoyment
